Military Residents Information

If you’re an active-duty service member, veteran, or military family member living in or relocating to Duval County, Florida, you may be eligible for driver license, registration, tax, and hunting/fishing benefits. This guide summarizes key exemptions, discounts, and processes available to military residents.

 

Driver Licenses & ID Cards

 

Veteran Designation

Add a "Veteran" designation to your Florida driver license or ID card at no cost, unless you make other changes.

What you need:

  • DD-214 showing honorable discharge or
  • Veteran ID Card from the VA

Fee: Free if no other changes are made. Standard fees apply if other changes are requested.

 

Fee Exemptions for Disabled Veterans

Veterans who are 100% permanently and totally disabled due to service-connected injuries may be eligible for fee exemptions on driver licenses and ID cards.

What you need:

  • Proof of honorable discharge
  • Documentation from the VA showing 100% service-connected disability

Deployed or Out-of-State Renewals


On active duty and deployed outside Florida? You may be able to renew or update your license/ID without visiting a local office.

$225 Initial Registration Fee Exemption

First time registering a vehicle in Florida? Military members may be exempt from the $225 Initial Registration Fee.

What you need:

Sales Tax Exemption (Out-of-State Purchases)

You may be exempt from Florida sales tax when titling a vehicle purchased out of state if:

  • The vehicle will not be brought into Florida for at least 6 months

 Insurance Exemption

If you’re stationed in another state, you may register a vehicle in Florida using out-of-state insurance. Complete the Military Insurance Exemption Information and Affidavit of the Military Packet (Insurance Affidavit) 

Note: Vehicles kept in Florida must have Florida insurance.
