Registration & Renewal

Florida law requires motor vehicles, trailers, vessels, and mobile homes to be titled and/or registered.

Annual Renewal

• Tags (registration) must be renewed each year by midnight on the owner's birthday.
• A late fee applies after the 10th day of the month following your birthday.
• Vehicles are registered based on weight; trailers, vessels, and mobile homes by length.

Insurance Requirements

To register or renew a vehicle in Florida, you must show:

• $10,000 PIP (Personal Injury Protection) insurance
• $10,000 PDL (Property Damage Liability) insurance

Note: Motorcycles, trailers, and mobile homes are exempt from insurance requirements.

 

License Plates

• Florida uses metal license plates with an alphanumeric system.
• License plates are valid for 10 years, with a new plate issued in the 10th year.
• Most plates are mounted on the rear of the vehicle.

• If you have sold your vehicle, and/or are canceling the insurance, you will need to surrender your license plate and registration. Please visit a branch or mail the license plate and payment of $6.25 to:

Didn’t Receive Your Tag?

If you renewed your registration but didn’t receive your tag or decal:

• Visit any Duval Tax Collector branch in person
• Or mail an Application for Replacement (Form HSMV 83146) with valid ID

Renewals by Mail

• License plates, decals, and registration receipts can be mailed to you.
• If a metal plate is issued, an additional mailing fee applies.

 

Change of Address

To ensure you receive renewal notices:

• Notify us of your address change within 20 days
• Provide your license plate number when submitting the change

Note: Renewal notices are sent as a courtesy. It is your responsibility to keep your registration current.

 

Military Rates

Non-resident military personnel stationed in Florida may qualify for discounted registration.

To qualify:

• Submit a copy of military orders to a Florida duty station
• Provide a signed Military Non-Resident Affidavit
• Show proof of Florida insurance

If the vehicle is not titled in Florida, include:

• A copy of the out-of-state title/registration
• A VIN verification by a Florida notary, DMV employee, military officer, or licensed dealer

Important: Claiming non-resident military status disqualifies you from Florida's homestead exemption. Contact the Duval County Property Appraiser for more details.

Vehicle Titles

Florida Title Transfers

To transfer a Florida title:

• Complete the Transfer of Title by Seller section
• Include buyer's name, sale price, and odometer reading
• Provide a bill of sale (optional, but helpful)
• Pay sales tax, if required
• Transfer must be completed within 30 days or a $20 late fee applies

Out-of-State Titles

To transfer an out-of-state title:

• Submit the current title with proper assignment
• Complete VIN and odometer verification (Form HSMV 82042)
• Complete and sign a Florida Title Application
• Pay sales tax, if applicable

New Vehicle Titles

To title a new vehicle:

• Submit the Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin (MCO) signed by the dealer
• Complete the title application (Form HSMV 82040)
• Provide VIN and odometer verification
• Include buyer’s name, FL address, DOB, sex, DL number, and any lien info
• Show proof of insurance
• Pay sales tax, if required

• Additional $10 fee applies
• Bring all required documents and the Authorization for Fast Title Release Form
• Walk-in customers receive the title immediately, or it can be mailed
